Heinz Family Foundation announces 2023 Heinz Award recipients

The Heinz Family Foundation in Pittsburgh has announced the winners of the 28th annual Heinz Awards.

Established in 1993 to honor the memory of Sen. John Heinz (R-PA), who was killed in a plane crash in 1991, the awards recognize extraordinary individuals for their achievement in finding solutions to critical issues in areas that were important to Heinz: the arts, the economy, and the environment. The award includes an unrestricted cash prize of $250,000.

This year’s winners in the arts category are Kevin Beasley—a multidisciplinary artist whose work is inspired by his personal experiences of grappling with history, generational memory, power, and race in America—and Roberto Lugo, a ceramicist, activist, poet, and educator whose works depict narratives about social resistance movements, hip-hop culture, and his own Puerto Rican and African heritage. In the economy category, the recipients are Kathryn Finney, author and managing general partner of Genius Guild in Chicago, and Leah Penniman, co-founder of Soul Fire Farm in Petersburg, New York.

In the environment category, the winners include Nicole Horseherder, co-founder of Tó Nizhóní Ání (TNA) in Kykotsmovi, Arizona, and Colette Pichon Battle, co-founder of Taproot Earth in Slidell, Louisiana.

“Though distinctly unique in their work and life experiences, each recipient of the 28th Heinz Awards demonstrates an unwavering vision for a better world, upheld by years of dedication and perseverance to achieve positive change,” said Heinz Family Foundation chair Teresa Heinz. “From shedding new light on our history as Americans and on the injustices affecting our people, our communities, and our land, to breaking down barriers to economic opportunity, they show us the tremendous ripple of impact one person can have. Each exemplifies the qualities that my husband, John Heinz, held in highest regard: intellectual curiosity; an informed optimism; a passion for excellence; a willingness to take on risks; and the joyous belief that individuals have the power and the responsibility to change the world for the better.”
