Henry L. Hillman Foundation awards $7 million to arts organizations
The Henry L. Hillman Foundation has announced grants totaling $7 million in support of Pittsburgh-area arts and cultural organizations impacted by COVID-19.
Fifty-seven arts nonprofits were awarded grants ranging from $20,000 to $1 million to help close budget deficits, prepare for reopening, and/or expand their programs. Recipients include the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh ($1 million), which operates the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the Carnegie Science Center, and the Andy Warhol Museum. Other recipients include the August Wilson African American Cultural Center ($125,000), the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh ($250,000), the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council ($60,000), Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre ($250,000), the Pittsburgh Trust for Cultural Resources ($500,000), Pittsburgh Youth Chorus ($20,000), and SLB Radio Productions, Inc. ($20,000).
Over the last twelve months, the Henry L. Hillman, Hillman, Elsie H. Hillman, Mary Hillman Jennings, and Polk foundations have provided more than $45 million in emergency COVID-19 response grants to nonprofits in the region.
"With the prospect of additional federal support in the coming months and, hopefully, the end of this difficult period in sight, we thought this was the right time to provide needed support for the arts sector and encourage others to do so, too," said Hillman Family Foundations president David Roger in a statement. "Arts and cultural organizations have borne some of the most devastating impacts of the pandemic — extended full closures, staff layoffs and pay cuts and continued uncertainty as to when operations might resume. These organizations, so critical to our quality of life in the Pittsburgh region, have proven to be resilient and creative in keeping their lights on to the extent possible. However, make no mistake, they've been terribly impacted and we need to get behind them as they ramp up operations and programs in the next year."
