Freedom Dreams in Philanthropy (FDP) has announced a $1 million grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation in support of ongoing efforts to transform the field of philanthropy and its role in the movement to advance racial equity and justice.

Launched in May, FDP is a collaborative of social sector professionals who embrace the tradition of freedom dreaming—a practice of articulating an ideal future and harnessing tools and resources to move toward that reality—in service to racial justice and collective liberation. To date, FDP’s efforts include working with writers and artists in the practice of freedom dreaming, providing guidance and methodological tools for personal and cultural transformation, and creating spaces where institutional philanthropy can “dream collectively and organize for action.”

This month, FDP co-lead Chera Reid, co-executive director of the Center for Evaluation Innovation, was named to Hewlett’s Racial Justice Advisory Council.

“Hewlett is modeling what it means to increase and expand commitments to transformation in service to racial justice,” said Reid. “This grant will make a significant impact in our efforts to continue collecting and sharing insights with the field and creating community around freedom dreaming as practice.”
