HHMI Awards $3.2 Million to Marine Biological Laboratory Education Program
The Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, has announced a four-year, $3.2 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to support its advanced education program.
Each year MBL trains more than four hundred and fifty advanced graduate and postgraduate students through its discovery-based education system, which offers nearly two dozen intensive laboratory courses as well as mentoring and training with scientists at the height of their careers. As part of its mission to advance biomedical research and science education in the United States, HHMI has awarded more than $28 million in support of MBL education over the past twenty years.
"The education experience at the MBL is unique, and we believe that no single university could mount courses comparable to those offered at the MBL nor capture [its] stimulating, creative, and transformative atmosphere," said MBL director of education William Reznikoff. "HHMI's long-term partnership with the MBL has permitted us to maintain our tradition of excellence by allowing the recruitment of world class faculty, underwriting course supplies, and enabling the MBL to admit the 'best and the brightest' students without regard to their financial needs. We are very grateful for their ongoing support."
