Hoag Hospital receives $106 million from Audrey Steele Burnand estate

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, California, has announced a $106 million gift from the estate of Audrey Steele Burnand.

The largest gift in the history of the hospital will support innovation, growth, and expansion. President and CEO Robert T. Braithwaite said the gift would help fuel the hospital’s commitment to significantly expand its compassion-based healthcare services and programs across Orange County.

“Simply put, we’re driven to achieve the highest level of medical standards and outcomes for our patients, and this gift will help us achieve that goal,” said Braithwaite. “We’re inspired by the support we continue to receive from the community as we help to not only offer the latest advancements in care but to discover them.”

The Steele family made their first gift of $8 million in the 1960s to support cancer and cardiology research and treatments, and the most recent commitment brings the family’s total support for the hospital to $134 million. Steele Burnand died in 2020 at the age of 98.

“The Steele family’s decades of generosity, continued by the Audrey Steele Burnand estate, have benefited the Orange County community in immeasurable ways,” said Hoag Hospital Foundation president Flynn Andrizzi. “Through this remarkable gift, they once again have demonstrated their compassion for everyone who needs outstanding medical care. I can’t think of enough words to properly express how moved all of us at Hoag are by their generosity.”
