Hollywood Foreign Press Association Awards $1.5 Million in Grants
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced grants totaling more than $1.5 million to forty-one film schools and other nonprofits.
Grants announced by the foundation include $350,000 to the Film Foundation to help preserve the culture and history of film; $100,000 to the Sundance Institute for professional training and mentoring; $50,000 to FilmAid International to promote cultural exchange through film; and $25,000 to Inner-City Filmmakers to support pre-professional training and education. HFPA also awarded $110,000 to the University of California, Los Angeles; $60,000 to the California Institute of the Arts; and $50,000 to Columbia University to fund fellowships and provide institutional support.
In addition, special projects grants were awarded to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art ($75,000), the Lollipop Theater Network ($15,000), and the Young Musicians Foundation ($10,000).
Founded during World War II, HFPA originally comprised a handful of Los Angeles-based foreign correspondents who sought to connect the international community with Hollywood and use film to provide a distraction from the hardships of war. Sixty-six years later, HFPA is made up of journalists from fifty-five countries who work for some of the world's most respected publications. Each year, the organization presents the Golden Globe Awards, which have helped HFPA raise more than $12 million for entertainment-related charities and scholarship programs.
