Howard Hughes Medical Institute announces 2022 Gilliam Fellows
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Chevy Chase, Maryland, has announced its 2022 cohort of Gilliam Fellows.
Through the annual Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study program, 51 graduate students and their advisors will receive a total of $53,000 per year—a $3,000 increase from awards announced in 2021—for up to three years to create an inclusive academic environment and increase the diversity of scientists at the faculty level. This year’s fellows come from 38 schools across the United States and represent populations historically excluded and underrepresented in science. To date, the program has selected more than 400 fellows.
In collaboration with the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research, Gilliam advisors participate in a year-long course of mentor development activities that emphasizes cultural awareness. Since 2015, more than 200 Gilliam advisors have completed the training.
"To support the development of these students as future scientific leaders, it’s crucial to provide high-quality mentoring, financial support, an inclusive lab environment, and a supportive community," said HHMI senior director for science education David Asai. “True change will not happen on campuses without the support and commitment of faculty and institutional leaders.”
