Huntington Library Receives $1 Million From Steve Martin
The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California, has received a $1 million gift from entertainer Steve Martin, the Associated Press reports.
The gift, which will be awarded over five years, will be used to support new acquisitions for the Huntington's American art collection, which many feel is often overshadowed by the library's European collection, and to produce new exhibitions. The library also plans to double its exhibition space for American art.
"We need more of this type of exhibition in Southern California, and the Huntington is clearly interested in doing just that — bringing significant works of American art to light, contextualizing them, and helping visitors become better acquainted with the artists, the technique, and the significance of the pieces," said Martin, a serious collector in his own right whose collection includes works by Roy Lichtenstein, Pablo Picasso, Edward Hopper, and Georges Seurat.
