Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City has announced that it is changing its name to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in honor of trustee Carl C. Icahn, whose recent $150 million gift boosts his lifetime giving total to the school to $200 million.

Awarded as part of a capital campaign scheduled to conclude in 2013, the latest gift from Icahn will support general medical and genomics research at Mount Sinai. The gift also helped push the campaign past its original $1 billion goal and moves it considerably closer to its new $1.3 billion goal.

"Carl's support enables our scientists and clinicians to continue pursuing groundbreaking discoveries," said Mount Sinai president and CEO Kenneth L. Davis. "We are honored to bear the Icahn School of Medicine name as we revolutionize health care for Mount Sinai patients and for patients around the world."

One of the nation's most prominent and influential investors, Icahn has been a member of Mount Sinai's board of trustees and a trustee of the School of Medicine since 2000. His previous contributions to the school resulted in a state-of-the-art medical school research building on campus being named the Icahn Medical Institute.

Charney, the Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz dean of the Icahn School of Medicine and executive vice president for academic affairs of the Mount Sinai Medical Center.
