IKEA awards $12.6 million in Sudan relief to MSF and Better Shelter
The IKEA Foundation has announced a €5 million ($5.38 million) grant to Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and a €6.7 million ($7.21 million) grant to Better Shelter to assist the estimated 1.4 million people displaced by internecine warfare in Sudan.
The grant to MSF will bolster efforts to provide urgent medical care and supplies to local hospitals that have been overwhelmed by people with serious injuries fleeing the violence in the capital, Khartoum. In addition, the grant will fund access to clean water and sanitation in 10 regions where MSF is operating.
“As the conflict in Sudan spirals into its second month and humanitarian needs outstrip response capacity, IKEA Foundation’s backing of our medical work across the country marks a collective resolution to take all possible measures to support those caught in the violence,” said MSF director general Stephen Cornish.
The grant to Better Shelter will enable the Sweden-based nonprofit to deploy 3,000 emergency housing units—sheltering as many as 15,000 people—in Chad and Ethiopia, countries neighboring Sudan that are most affected by the flow of refugees.
“The current situation in Sudan is alarming. Millions of people are experiencing insecurity, food and water scarcity, and various challenges that require urgent attention,” said Better Shelter acting director Johan Mast. “Shelter is a fundamental human need that provides physical protection and helps with emotional healing and recovery from the traumatic experiences they have endured.”
