INN Index shows nonprofit news growth stable
Despite a tumultuous media environment, the nonprofit news sector appears stable, a report from the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) finds.
According to INN’s 2023 Index survey—which is completed annually by INN’s member newsrooms across North America—nonprofit news organizations saw their revenue increase 22 percent overall year-over-year, and the number of outlets in INN’s sample increased 11 percent. Most nonprofit news outlets continued growing or maintaining total revenue, according to the survey. In addition, local outlets were driving the growth of the nonprofit news sector, with 48 percent of outlets surveyed in 2023 identifying as local news operations.
While revenue data was promising, the survey, now in its seventh year, highlighted major shifts in the sector with several layoffs and closures of high-profile nonprofit news outlets throughout the year, including the downsizing of Texas Tribune and Futuro Media, and the closures of Southerly and The Tyler Loop.
“Promising trends reflected in the Index data [do] not mean nonprofit news is foolproof,” INN wrote in a press release. “But by tracking and reporting such trends in nonprofit news, INN continues its role as an informed partner on news outlets’ journey to sustainability.”
