Iowa West, Lakin Foundations Give $7 Million for New YMCA Facility

The Iowa West Foundation has announced a joint lead gift of $7 million, including $3.5 million from the Charles E. Lakin Foundation in Omaha, for a new YMCA facility in Council Bluffs.

The two gifts will help fund construction of the $16 million facility, which will include sports courts, exercise rooms, wellness classrooms, a teen center, therapy and lap pools, a walking track, a preschool, and a playground. The facility is scheduled to open in the fall of 2015.

The Lakin and Iowa West foundations have previously partnered on the Charles E. Lakin Human Services Campus and the Charles E. Lakin Habitat for Humanity Center in Council Bluffs.

"In today's world, partnerships are critical for success, especially for nonprofit organizations," said Iowa West Foundation president and CEO Pete Tulipana. "A family-friendly project such as the YMCA helps meet the Iowa West mission for an improved quality of life, and it is a project with an opportunity to invite partners to the community table."
