Judith Rothschild Foundation Awards $260,000 to Create Interest in 'Under-Recognized' Artists

The New York City-based Judith Rothschild Foundation has announced twenty-two grants totaling more than $260,000 to stir interest in the work of thirty-nine recently deceased, "under-recognized" American artists.

The grants, which range from $5,00 to $20,000, will support the artists' work through museum and gallery exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and conservation, research, and documentation. The artists whose work will be supported by this year's garnts include painter David Cannon Dashiell; painter Robert Dowd; sculptor Peter Grippe; artist Conrad House; painter/sculptor Reuben Kadish; painter/sculptor Lee Mullican; painter/sculptor John David Rigsby; painter Hale Woodruff; painters Ruth Armer, Margaret Bruton, Elsie Drigs, Elizabeth Eyre De Lanux, Sarah McPherson, Elizabeth Olds, Margaret Rocle, and Margery Ryerson; painters Gertrude Abercrombie, Otis Marion Dozier, Jared French, James Guy, Alexandre Hogue, Charles Howard, Helen Lundeberg, George Marinko, and Charles Rain; painter Carlos Almaraz; painter Nell Blaine; painter Norman Bluhm; painter Louis Finkelstein; painter Howard Mehring; sculptor George Sugarman; photojournalist Esther Bubley; photographer/painter Herbert Creecy; and painter Esphyr Slobodkina.

"Since its inception in 1995, the Judith Rothschild Foundation's grant program has contributed more than $2.5 million toward a wide range of projects, providing well over two hundred opportunities for significant re-evaluation of the work of recently deceased American artists," said Elizabeth Slater, vice president of the foundation's grant program. "Through this juried process, we are committed to calling long-overdue attention to the vital, yet often little-known contributions these artists have made to our culture."
