Kansas State receives $10.2 million gift for student wellness

Kansas State University has announced a $10.2 million gift from alumni Charlie and Debbie Morrison in support of student well-being initiatives.

The gift will establish the Morrison Center for Student Well-Being as a hub for student well-being programs, data gathering and analysis with respect to issues affecting students, and the promotion of other campus wellness initiatives. The gift includes funding for the hiring of staff, suicide prevention and bystander training, wellness research, mental health treatment, and a biofeedback/performance laboratory.

The gift also includes funding for a scholarship for first-generation students and for Cats' Cupboard, the university’s food pantry, which in 2020 served more than ninety-four hundred members of the K-State community. In recognition of the gift, the director position at Cats' Cupboard will be named after the Morrisons.

"Our gifts are to help students who are struggling, which is all students at some point. College is a big life transition, with stresses and pressure," said the couple, both of whom serve on the board of the Kansas State University Foundation, in a statement. "These investments will provide students access to the assistance they need, while maintaining their dignity without scrutiny. K-State family supported us when we needed it, so we are paying it forward."
