Kresge Foundation Awards $5.1 Million to Detroit Arts Organizations
The Kresge Foundation has announced grants totaling $5.1 million to sixty-six arts and cultural organizations in the Detroit metro area.
Unrestricted operating support grants ranging from $5,000 to $75,000 were awarded through the foundation's Detroit Arts Support initiative to organizations of all sizes in the performing, visual, and literary arts as well as institutions engaged in arts service, arts education, and arts broadcasting. Slightly more than half the funding will support the activities of small- to midsize organizations, including the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the InsideOut Literary Arts Project, the Jewish Ensemble Theatre, and Arts and Scraps. The balance of the funding was awarded to larger institutions, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Henry Ford, and the Sphinx Organization. Since its inception in 2007, the initiative has awarded more than $24 million to arts and cultural organizations in the Detroit area.
Since 2010, Kresge has worked closely with the Detroit-based Erb Family Foundation on a shared application and review process for the grants, although the two foundations make their final funding decisions independently of each other. In addition to the general operating support grants, the Erb Family Foundation announced forty-three three-year grants totaling $4 million — forty-one of them to organizations in the city of Detroit.
"These groups enrich the quality of life for residents of all ages across the region and raise the profile of Detroit, locally, and nationally," said George Jacobsen, senior program officer of Kresge's Detroit Program. "This support will help these organizations fulfill their roles in inspiring, engaging and revitalizing southeast Michigan communities."
