Lake Forest College Receives Unexpected Seven-Figure Gift

Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois, has received a $7 million bequest from alumna Grace Groner, who died in January at the age of 100, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Groner, who never married, had previously established a small scholarship program at the school. The estate gift, which stemmed from a $180 stock purchase she made in 1935, will be placed in a foundation that will enable many of Lake Forest's thirteen hundred students to pursue internships and study-abroad opportunities, while generating an estimated $300,000 in interest each year. Groner also left her one-story home to the college, which plans to convert it into living quarters for women who receive scholarships from the foundation.

"She did not have the [material] needs that other people have," said William Marlatt, her attorney and longtime friend. "She could have lived in any house in Lake Forest, but she chose not to....She enjoyed other people, and every friend she had was a friend for who she was. They weren't friends for what she had."
