Langeloth Foundation awards $1.35 million for civic participation

The Jacob and Valeria Langeloth Foundation in New York City has announced eight grants totaling $1.35 million in support of organizations working to strengthen civic participation and engagement in advance of the 2020 elections.

The final distributions in a $10 million civic participation commitment announced in June were made with funds intentionally held back so the foundation could be responsive to evolving needs as election season approaches. The recipients of grants ranging from $50,000 to $300,000 include All Voting is Local, which works to combat voter suppression and is advocating for a set of reforms to address the impact of COVID-19 on this fall's elections; Head Count, a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization that promotes voter engagement through music and culture that, in this election cycle, is working to register 200,000 voters and directly engage with a total of a million voters; the Fair Elections Center, a nonpartisan voting rights and election reform organization that uses litigation and advocacy to remove barriers to registration and voting; the Youth Engagement Fund, a donor collaborative focused on deepening and expanding civic engagement initiatives led by and for young people of color; and the Voto Latino Foundation, a grassroots organization focused on educating and empowering a new generation of Latinx voters that is working to engage, register, and activate more than 500,000 new voters in eleven key states and mobilize 1.5 million low-propensity voters by November.

"Since releasing the first $8 million in June, we have been working to galvanize our fellow philanthropic leaders to meet the urgent needs of civic participation organizers working on the ground," said the foundation's president, Scott Moyer. "We have received an overwhelming response to that call, but there remains a significant need for further investment. This commitment is the largest Langeloth has ever made, and we are proud to deploy this final $1.35 million to support the incredible work being done by these groups."
