Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies Receives $10 Million Matching Pledge

The Joseph H. Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and the Wharton School have announced a $10 million matching pledge in support of the institute's first fundraising and engagement campaign, which coincides with the institute's thirtieth anniversary.

The pledge from Ronald S. Lauder; his brother, Leonard A. Lauder; nephew, William P. Lauder; and the Lauder Foundation kicks off the Lauder Institute Challenge: Investing in Global Leaders, a five-year, $20 million campaign in support of student fellowships, curricular innovations, and technology enhancements. The institute was established in 1983 by Leonard and Ronald Lauder in honor of their father, Joseph, who with his wife co-founded the Estée Lauder Companies. Graduates of the institute earn an M.A. in International Studies from Penn's School of Arts and Sciences and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School or a J.D. from Penn Law. Lauder Fellows also earn a certificate of language fluency.

Ronald S. Lauder, chairman of Estée Lauder's Clinique Laboratories, is a 1965 graduate of the Wharton School. In 1987, he established the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation, which is dedicated to revitalizing Jewish communities in Central and Eastern Europe and supports a variety of student exchange programs. His brother, Leonard A. Lauder, is a 1954 Wharton graduate and chairman emeritus of Estée Lauder. William P. Lauder, the son of Evelyn and Leonard Lauder, received his bachelor's degree from Wharton in 1983 and has been executive chairman of Estée Lauder since 2009.

"My brother Leonard and I set out to create a unique environment in which to nurture and develop our future global leaders," said Ronald Lauder. "Our goal was to attract candidates who honored the best qualities of our father, Joseph: intelligence, curiosity, and an openness to the world. We could never have imagined thirty years later we would be celebrating such an accomplished group of leaders — and a program that continues to define global business education. We are delighted to have the next generation of Lauder family commitment with the addition of William to the board."
