A number of New York City cultural institutions, including the 92nd Street Y and Lincoln Center Theater, have received gifts totaling $15.5 million from the estate of Amber Lightfoot Walker, who died in 2014, the New York Times reports.

The widow of Angus Lightfoot Walker — longtime chair of the executive committee of the City Investing Company of New York — had requested in her will that two friends — the writer Steven M.L. Aronson and Robert Eddy Armstrong, former president of the Henry Luce Foundation — donate part of her estate to "organizations that promote the creation, advancement, and enjoyment of literature."

Through the bequest, the 92nd Street Y will receive $7 million in support of its reading series and a literature project for students, both of which will be renamed in memory of the Lighfoots' son, Christopher, who had been a longtime volunteer at the Y's Poetry Center. In addition, Lincoln Center Theater was awarded $5 million to establish a Christopher Lightfoot Walker Literary Fund, which will support the Directors Lab, the Playwrights Program, a dramaturge, and The Lincoln Center Review; the Morgan Library & Museum was awarded $2 million to endow in perpetuity its "Treasures From the Vault" exhibition, which has included a Gutenberg Bible and manuscripts by Johann Sebastian Bach and Isaac Newton; and the American Academy of Arts and Letters will receive $1.5 million in support of a biannual $100,000 award to be given to American writers.
