Lilly Endowment awards $33 million to Indiana community foundations

The Lilly Endowment has announced leadership grants totaling $33 million to eleven community foundations in Indiana working to strengthen the towns, cities, and counties they serve.

Through the seventh and final round of the endowment's Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT) program, grants ranging from $250,000 to $5 million were awarded in support of local programs and initiatives focused on mental health and addiction treatment, cultural heritage preservation, social services for low-income workers and their families, affordable housing, and workforce development.

Recipients include the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County in South Bend, which will use its grant to combat generational poverty; the Heritage Fund of Bartholomew County in Columbus, which will use the funds to support the preservation of the city's rich architectural and cultural heritage; the Kosciusko County Community Foundation in Warsaw, in support of a comprehensive, cross-sector initiative focused on affordable housing, childcare, workforce development, and talent attraction and retention; and the Warren County Community Foundation in Williamsport, in support of opportunities to enhance local recreational amenities.

"We believe these eleven grants hold the promise of helping community foundations further establish and enhance the leadership roles they uniquely play in improving the quality of life for their communities' residents, which is a central aim of the GIFT initiative," said Lilly Endowment vice president for community development Ronni Kloth. "We are pleased with the collaborations that have been created and developed by the community foundations throughout this highly competitive process and look forward to seeing the impact of their efforts on these very compelling needs in the years to come."
