Logan Foundation Awards Photographic Book Collection to UC Berkeley

The University of California, Berkeley has announced gifts totaling more than $3.8 million from the Reva and David Logan Foundation in support of its Graduate School of Journalism.

The gifts include the Logan Photographic Book Collection, a collection of nearly three thousand photography books valued at more than $700,000; $3.1 million for an endowed professorship and gallery; and additional funds for a range of academic and public activities related to the book collection. Among other things, the gift will be used to establish a permanent endowment to promote documentary photography and photojournalism at the journalism school and the university’s Bancroft Library, which will house the collection.

"The addition of this staggering collection to the library’s existing resources will propel UC Berkeley to a new level," said Bancroft photo curator Jack von Euw. "No other institution, including the Library of Congress and the Getty Research Center, can offer this breadth and depth of material for research into photojournalism and socially engaged photography. The gift of these books ensures that UC Berkeley will be a major center for the study of photography, on par with the George Eastman House in New York and the Center for Creative Photography in Arizona."
