Luxembourg Pledges $9.3 Million to Global Fund
The Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria has announced that Luxembourg is increasing its commitment to €8.1 million ($9.3 million) for the three-year replenishment cycle that starts in 2017.
The commitment represents an 8 percent increase for the European nation over its previous contribution to the fund. One of the most generous donors to the fund on a per capita basis, Luxembourg, with a population of just over half a million, contributes nearly 1 percent of its gross national income to official development assistance, including a total of €38 million ($44 million) over the years to the fund. It also is helping to finance Global Fund technical assistance efforts in El Salvador, Kosovo, and Laos.
"We are encouraged by [the] early pledges of countries like Luxembourg [which] continue to show exceptional commitment and generosity in supporting the Global Fund's mission," said Global Fund executive director Mark Dybul. "Thanks to partners like Luxembourg, we expect a strong replenishment this year, enabling the Global Fund to help achieve the global goal of ending the epidemics of HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria by 2030."
