Lyda Hill Philanthropies partners with Boston Museum of Science
The Museum of Science in Boston has received a gift of the IF/THEN Collection, valued at $20 million—as well as a $1 million grant to support the collection’s growth—from Lyda Hill Philanthropies’ IF/THEN initiative.
According to the foundation, the collection is the world’s largest free digital library of photos and videos celebrating diverse, contemporary women in STEM. Announced on International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the gift provides access to more than 5,000 photos and videos showcasing a variety of STEM-related careers. Through the Museum of Science, the IF/THEN Collection is projected to reach more than 80 million people over the next five years.
In addition, the foundation announced a multiyear partnership with Hello Sunshine, a media company, to develop and produce storytelling centered around women and girls in STEM. A number of docuseries focused on women’s sports and music are already in production, with additional subjects on the horizon. The partnership will also develop social campaigns, educational programming, and expereinces to amplify the impact of the storytelling.
“At IF/THEN we believe that IF you can see it, THEN you can be it,” said Lyda Hill Philanthropies founder Lyda Hill, who was among the inaugural cohort of Giving Pledge signatories in 2010. “This partnership is about meeting young audiences where they are—through entertainment, culture, and storytelling—to subtly and powerfully shift perceptions about STEM by featuring women in these fields in ways that spark curiosity about science.”
