MacArthur Foundation Awards $1.5 Million to PBS Documentary Series

American Documentary | POV has announced that the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has renewed its support for the PBS documentary series POV with a three-year, $1.5 million grant.

Since its inception in 1988, POV has broadcast more than three hundred documentaries, garnering twenty-three Emmy Awards, twelve George Foster Peabody Awards, and three Academy Awards in the process. POV premieres between fourteen and sixteen films annually, and this year will explore topics such as globalization, environmentalism, and wars past and present. In addition to providing support for filmmakers, POV works with public-television stations, educators, and community organizations to offer free discussion guides, screenings, and special events for the series' films.

"At MacArthur, we view documentaries as a form of journalism, supplementing the news media in helping audiences make sense of their community and world," said MacArthur Foundation director of media, culture, and special initiatives Kathy Im. "The MacArthur Foundation is proud of its long-time association with POV. Each year, the series presents timely and thought-provoking films that raise important and under-reported issues."
