MacKenzie Scott awards five grants totaling $28.8 million

Through her charitable giving vehicle, Yield Giving, Giving Pledge signatory MacKenzie Scott has awarded five grants totaling $28.8 million, including support of healthcare centers, workforce development programs, and legal services.

The commitments include $5 million to Siouxland Community Health Center (SCHC) in Sioux City, Iowa, a Federally Qualified Health Center providing medical, dental, behavioral health, urgent care, and pharmacy services. SCHC chief executive Mari Kaptain-Dahlen said in a statement that a study group of executive leaders and executive committee members of the board will identify transformative initiatives to be funded by the gift.

Through the Chicago Community Trust, Scott awarded $9 million—according to Block Club Chicago—to Aunt Martha’s Health and Wellness in Olympia Fields, Illinois, which works to provide high-quality, value-based, integrated care in some of the most underserved communities. “Amazingly, there are no restrictions on our use of the funds, which allows Aunt Martha’s to determine how best to utilize this generous donation and empowers our continued innovation in transforming systems of care to be more inclusive, accessible, and patient-centered,” said Aunt Martha’s president and CEO Raul Garza.

An $8 million grant to Chicago-based Cara Collective will enable the workforce development and poverty alleviation organization to broaden its reach throughout the city, diversify programming, buttress systemic impact and innovations, and invest in staff and infrastructure. The grant is the largest in the history of the organization. “This investment is an acknowledgment of the work Cara Collective has done to support thousands of job seekers in finding gainful employment opportunities and a testament to the dedication of our community who helped us reach this incredible moment,” said Cara Collective president and CEO Kathleen St. Louis Caliento. “It also demonstrates Ms. Scott’s shared commitment to building an inclusive economy for all.”

A $5 million gift to Skills for Chicagoland’s Future will support efforts to break down barriers to employment for overlooked talent on the south and west sides of Chicago as well as expand its model across the country. The gift will enable the organization to invest in programs such as comprehensive technology, a referral system, and tools and support for employers. “I love that she is finding great organizations like Skills and transforming the nonprofit sector,” said CEO Bridget Altenburg. “I hope more philanthropists follow her lead. A gift of this magnitude will have a massive impact on the people we serve from communities that continue to face persistently high unemployment and systemic barriers as a result of historic disinvestment and redlining.”

In addition, a $1.8 million gift was awarded to Legal Services of Greater Miami, which provides free civil legal services for the low-income communities of the Florida counties of Miami-Dade and Monroe.
