The James B. McClatchy Foundation (JBMF) in Sacramento, California, has announced its first “sunrise grants” totaling more than $10 million to 31 grassroots-based organizations in the state’s Central Valley.

A sunsetting foundation, JBMF has pledged to spend out its financial resources by 2030, and its first round of final grants are focused on inspiring philanthropic investments across the Central Valley—a region historically under-supported by philanthropic participation. The sunrise grants focus on activating inclusive leadership and reinvigorating the Central Valley’s fatigued and frustrated nonprofit ecosystem. Grants also will support various journalism initiatives, including training and capacity-building programs for local journalists from underrepresented communities, flexible operating support for community organizers, and deep investments in grassroots media channels prioritizing diverse voices.

“We know that decades-long structural inequities that have led to generational poverty and limited access to opportunity in the Central Valley cannot be fixed overnight,” said McClatchy Foundation CEO Priscilla Enriquez. “That is why the foundation has decided in its sunset to elevate the Central Valley, invest all our resources in the people and places where change needs to be made, and leverage our sunset to ignite greater investments from philanthropy.”
