MetLife Foundation Awards $1 Million to Science Museums

The New York City-based MetLife Foundation has announced grants totaling $1 million to fifteen science museums across the United States through its Partnership for Lifelong Learning program.

The initiative aims to increase educational opportunities for people of all ages and encourage exhibitions that promote a better understanding of aging, brain health, and healthful lifestyles. The winning museums will use the grants to create appealing, accessible exhibitions and intergenerational science education programs. One of the recipients, the New Detroit Science Center, will use the grant to design a Good Health Can't Weight exhibit whose interactive experiences will show visitors how good brain health, exercise, and mental fitness can improve quality of life.

The other recipients are the Brogan Museum of Art and Science (Tallahassee, Florida), the DaVinci Discovery Center (Allentown, Pennsylvania), the Discovery Center of Science and Technology (Syracuse, New York), Explora (Albuquerque, New Mexico), the Gateway to Science Center (Bismarck, North Dakota), the Gulf Cost Exploreum Science Center (Mobile, Alabama), the Health Museum (Houston, Texas), the Museum of Science and Planetarium (Miami, Florida), the Montshire Museum of Science (Norwich, Vermont), the Hall of Science (Flushing, New York), the Palouse Discovery Science Center (Pullman, Washington), the Science Museum of Minnesota (St. Paul, Minnesota), ScienceSouth (Florence, South Carolina), and the SciTech Hands on Museum (Aurora, Illinois).

"MetLife Foundation has a long history of partnering with museums to support learning and development opportunities for people of all ages," said MetLife Foundation president and CEO Sibyl Jacobson. "Science museums, in particular, serve as excellent community and educational resources and are well positioned to provide an environment for intergenerational learning and exploration."
