Metropolitan Museum of Art receives $10 million gift for modern wing
The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) has announced a $10 million pledge from Michael ByungJu Kim to support renovation of the museum’s Oscar L. and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Wing for modern and contemporary art.
Discussions about revamping the modern wing have been in the works for more than a decade, and in November 2021, the Met announced a $125 million commitment from trustee emeritus Oscar L. Tang and Agnes Hsu-Tang to fully reimagine the current modern and contemporary galleries. Architect Frida Escobedo will lead the project to create 80,000 square feet of galleries and public space. In recognition of the gift, a gallery in the new wing will be named the Michael B. Kim and Kyung Ah Park Gallery, after the donor and his wife. Kim has served as an elective trustee at the Met since 2017.
“The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a preeminent global institution that connects art across time and space,” said Kim. “As a longtime supporter of the Met’s mission, I consider it an honor to contribute to its future with this gift, particularly in a venue that will bring together contemporary art, and visitors, from around the world.”
