Monmouth University Receives $5 Million Challenge for Marine Institute
Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey, has announced a $5 million challenge grant from an anonymous donor in support of a new marine science and policy initiative at the university's Urban Coast Institute.
The university stands to receive $3 million from the donor if it raises $2 million by the end of the year. The first challenge grant in the university’s history will bolster efforts at the school in the areas of coastal stewardship and conservation, storm recovery and resilience, and sustainable ocean use.
If met, the challenge also will enable the university to enhance the quality and scope of student and faculty research and support construction of a new marine sciences facility for its School of Science.
"The donor’s dedication to preservation of critical waterways and resources is so important, not just for the university but for our entire region," said Monmouth president Paul R. Brown. "The new funds will significantly advance collaborative research efforts to effectively serve the public interest on coastal and estuarine environmental issues."
