The oldest merit scholarship program in the United States covers all expenses for four years of undergraduate study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and provides a variety of summer enrichment programs, including an outdoor leadership course, public service activities in the U.S. or abroad, research opportunities, and business internships. Selected on the basis of merit and accomplishment, the 2017 class of Morehead-Cain Scholars includes twenty-three high school seniors from North Carolina, seventeen from twelve other states, one from Kenya, one from Italy, three from the United Kingdom, and three from Canada.
