Mother Cabrini Health Foundation awards $140 million in grants
Mother Cabrini Health Foundation has announced grants totaling $140 million in support of vulnerable communities across New York State.
The grants will support more than 450 organizations and programs working to address the health- and human services-related needs of low-income residents and underserved communities in 2022. The foundation awarded $54 million in support of general services for low-income individuals and families, including a grant to City Mission of Schenectady to expand its Transitional Housing and Wellness Center; $21 million to help meet the needs of young children, pregnant women, and new mothers, including a grant to Read to Them Inc. to reverse literacy loss caused by the pandemic; $18 million toward programming, nursing, and caregiving services for older adults, including a grant to Presbyterian Senior Services in support of its Life University program; and $18 million to programs serving youth and young adults, including a grant to the Mental Health Association of New York State for its Family Education Project.
The foundation also awarded $13 million in support of services for immigrants and migrant workers, including a grant to the Safe Passage Project to continue providing critical legal and social services for unaccompanied minor refugees facing immigration proceedings; $12 million toward housing and services for individuals with special needs, including a grant to the Westchester Institute for Human Development to expand mobile primary care services; $2 million to help expand opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals, including a grant to Providence House for its Women’s Justice Program; and $1 million to fund support services for veterans, including a grant to the Albany Housing Coalition to expand its Veterans Employment and Training Services program and provide case management to homeless veterans.
The 2021 year-end funding includes second-year grants totaling $14 million awarded to 46 programs focused on three areas: $4 million to improve oral health access and outcomes, $6 million to increase availability and access to quality health care, and $4 million in support of programs that provide young children in underserved communities with the health and education resources they need to succeed.
The latest grants are in addition to $20 million in COVID-19 relief grants awarded last May. In the three years since its inception, the foundation has awarded grants totaling nearly $470 million.
“After nearly two years of recovery from a pandemic that has hit vulnerable populations the hardest, we must continue to address the challenges communities across New York State are facing: food and housing insecurity; lack of access to basic health care, including vaccines; lack of equity within the healthcare professions; and racial and economic healthcare disparities made worse during COVID-19,” said Msgr. Gregory Mustaciuolo, CEO of the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation. “We must continue to support the full range of services that make for healthy people and communities.”
