Motown Museum receives $5 million toward expansion
The Motown Museum has received a $5 million gift from Rocket Companies and the Gilbert Family Foundation to complete the opening phase of the museum’s $55 million expansion, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Announced during a festive celebration to reopen the museum, which had been closed for the past year during renovations, the gift boosted the amount raised to $43 million in the museum’s fundraising campaign, which is slated to be complete in 2024. In recognition of the latest seven-figure gift, a paved outdoor space will be renamed Rocket Plaza. The final phase of the expansion will include a large building with new exhibit space behind the iconic Hitsville, U.S.A., house.
At the unveiling, which included a star-studded cast of Motown icons including Smokey Robinson, the Temptations’ Otis Williams, and the Four Tops’ Duke Fakir, U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) vowed to secure federal money as the museum marches toward its fundraising finish line.
“One of the things I love about the vision here is that it is about the next generation, for young people,” said Stabenow. “I gained confidence to stand before a crowd because of music. I learned math because of music. There are so many ways in which music creates the opportunity for young people to be successful.”
