Mott Foundation Awards $5 Million to Flint Cultural Institutions

The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation has announced grants totaling more than $5 million to three anchor institutions at the Flint Cultural Center.

One-year, operating support grants were awarded to the Flint Institute of Arts (more than $2.2 million); the Flint Cultural Center Corporation ($1.7 million, including support for the Longway Planetarium, the Sloan Museum, and the Whiting); and the Flint Institute of Music ($1.1 million, including support for the Flint School of Performing Arts, the Flint Symphony Orchestra, and the Flint Youth Theatre). The grants will enable the institutions to continue offering free and low-cost activities, expand their collaborations with local schools, and host community events.

"It goes without saying that the Flint Cultural Center institutions are a key asset to the area's ongoing efforts to recover and revive as a community, and the value they add in quality of life for children and families cannot be overestimated," said Mott Foundation president and CEO William S. White. "As home to one of the nation's first planned cultural centers, Flint has a remarkable legacy in the arts. The Mott Foundation is proud to be able to contribute to the ongoing operation of these important community institutions, which serve a wide range of audiences in increasingly meaningful and creative ways."
