New York Community Trust Awards $11 Million in Grants

The New York Community Trust has announced grants totaling $11 million to eighty nonprofits working to help New Yorkers live healthy, independent, and productive lives.

Recipients include the Carter Burden Center for the Aging, which was awarded $110,000 to expand health services at its day program for low-income, chronically ill seniors; the AIDS Community Research Initiative of America, which will receive $100,000 to study the healthcare needs of older people living with HIV/AIDS; the Black Spectrum Theatre Company, which will receive $150,000 to manage and expand its afterschool theater education, mobile theater, and anti-gun-violence programs and improve its online presence; and the Pratt Area Community Council, which was awarded $65,000 to help low-income Brooklyn residents participate in affordable housing lotteries.

In addition, the trust awarded $100,000 to the Blackfeet Nation to help restore the natural migration patterns of bison along the U.S.-Canadian border; $30,000 to the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York to evaluate the impact of the New York Community Trust Nonprofit Excellence Awards on participating organizations and the nonprofit sector; $60,000 to the Citizens Union Foundation to study the causes of low voter turnout; $500,000 to the Creative Arts Team to improve students’ reading skills through a combination of teacher training, storytelling by teaching artists, and workshops for parents; and $200,000 to City Harvest to distribute 2.5 million pounds of healthy food, including fresh fruits and vegetables, in low-income neighborhoods.
