New York Women’s Foundation awards $1.54 million in grants
The New York Women’s Foundation (NYWF) has announced grants totaling $1.54 million in support of efforts to advance economic justice, strengthen democracy, end mass incarceration, and defend transgender rights.
In its spring 2023 grantmaking round, NYWF awarded 21 multiyear grants in alignment with its practice of trust-based philanthropy and strategic early and long-term investment in community-rooted organizations. New recipients include the Haitian Women’s Collective, which will further develop the infrastructure of its Haitian Women’s Fund to invest in the well-being and safety of women in Haiti, and Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies (FPWA), which will forge a national coalition to redefine the federal poverty measure to reflect the expenses and needs of Americans more accurately.
NYWF also awarded renewal grants, including $720,000 to expand the next phase of a multiyear cohort with the Brooklyn Economic Justice Project and $620,000 to sustain the Justice Fund, which is working to dismantle mass incarceration and its effects on families and communities by closing the Rikers Island jail facility and investing in alternatives that promote justice, safety, and overall well-being. Other grant recipients include the Alliance of Families for Justice, Brownsville Community Justice Center, the Bronx Defenders, LatinoJustice PRLDEF, and Transgender Law Center.
“[W]e cannot allow the persistent issues of economic injustice, threats to our democracy, and mass incarceration practices to go unchecked,” said NYWF president and CEO Ana L. Oliveira. “These grants allow us to authentically expand the geographic reach and impact of community-based solutions we believe are the keys to driving sustainable change for a more equitable tomorrow.”
