Northwestern receives $121 million from Querrey, Simpson family

Northwestern University has announced a $121 million gift from trustee Kimberly K. Querrey (P’22, ’23) and the estate of her late husband, former trustee and alumnus Louis Simpson (’58, P’96), in support of programs and initiatives at the Feinberg School of Medicine and the Kellogg School of Management.

The gift will fund four initiatives at the medical school—$64 million to support the construction of new facilities to expand the  Louis A. Simpson and Kimberly K. Querrey Biomedical Research Center, $25 million to create and endow the Simpson Querrey Lung Institute for Translational Science, $10 million to create and endow the Simpson Querrey Center for Neurovascular Sciences, and $11 million to bolster the Querrey Simpson Institute for Bioelectronics (QSIB).

The funding also provides $1 million for the Kimberly Prize in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics. Jennifer Doudna, who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2020, was the inaugural recipient of the annual prize of $250,000, established by Querrey in 2022. In addition, the gift includes $10 million in support of executive education programs at the business school, where Simpson served as senior fellow and adjunct professor. The couple have made gifts to the university totaling more than $379 million.

“I continue to be profoundly moved by Kimberly’s visionary support for our institute and our ongoing research at the intersection of engineering and medicine,” said QSIB director John Rogers. “This incredible investment will accelerate our work, geared fundamentally around unmet needs in patient care, to improve health outcomes at reduced costs, for developed and developing countries alike.”

“Our philanthropic investments focus on helping people,” said Querrey. “Lou and I often discussed the importance of improving the quality of life, particularly for those facing medical challenges. The physicians, scientists and engineers at Northwestern do groundbreaking, innovative work, realizing our vision of positively affecting people’s lives.”
