Omidyar Network commits $8 million to create inclusive tech initiative

The Omidyar Network has announced the launch of a four-year, $8 million initiative focused on connecting and empowering a new wave of leaders, companies, and technologies that are built on inclusivity, mutualism, sustainability, accountability, and responsible innovation.

The initiative, The Tech We Want, will provide assistance to 15 “Luminaries” charged with co-creating a collective vision for ethical technology, systems, and economies that generate value for all stakeholders, including technology creators, consumers, workers, communities, and the planet. The Luminaries are a diverse group of entrepreneurs, funders, thinkers, creatives, and builders with ideas on how to transform the tech industry. Through the partnership, Omidyar Network aims to share examples of what the tech industry and society should reward and correct and enable philanthropy to work in coalition toward a vision of innovation and collective well-being.

“If we want to develop a responsible tech future, we have to intentionally change who and what we produce. We need to support diverse organizations and inclusive communities working to redefine what technology culture can and should be,” said Omidyar Network senior vice president of programs Michele Lawrence Jawando. “As a social change venture, we have the opportunity and responsibility to invest in tech leaders with lived experiences, help them build collective power, and support their vision for a trustworthy tech future.”
