One Fund Boston to Award Additional $18 Million
One Fund Boston is drafting plans to award another $18 million to victims of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and considering how best to continue delivering services to them, the Boston Globe reports.
The organization told the Globe that it plans to give the majority of the next round of awards to individuals who sustained the most severe injuries, including those who had limbs severed or amputated. The organization said it may also use a portion of the funds to partner with local hospitals and city and state agencies to pay for programs and services still needed by victims.
In the first ninety days after the attack, a total of $61 million was donated to the fund. By July 29, the organization had distributed those funds to more than two hundred and thirty people who were hurt by the bombs or to relatives of those killed. An additional $18 million was contributed to the fund subsequently, including $6 million in 2014. Recent donations include both significant corporate gifts and gifts from individuals.
"This is an unprecedented amount of support for what was an attack on our community," said One Fund Boston president Jim Gallagher. "We will be here as long as the fund is effective in serving survivors."
