Partners for Sacred Places awards $2.1 million for historic spaces

Philadelphia-based Partners for Sacred Places has announced $2.1 million in grants to 16 religious congregations across the United States in support of repairs and renovations to their historically significant buildings.

The grants were made through the National Fund for Sacred Places (NFSC), a program in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and funded by the Lilly Endowment. The selected congregations will receive capital grants of up to $250,000 along with technical assistance to complete their preservation projects. Since 2016, NFSC has awarded or pledged over $18 million to 97 community-serving congregations in 36 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

The 2022 recipients include Arch Street Meeting House (Philadelphia), Boynton Chapel United Methodist Church (Houston), Calvary Baptist Church (Minneapolis), Christ Church Detroit (Detroit), Church of St. Francis of Assisi (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Crossnore Presbyterian Church (Crossnore, North Carolina), Dover Friends Meetinghouse (Dover, New Hampshire), East Mount Zion Baptist Church (Cleveland), Ebenezer Baptist Church (Atlanta), First Presbyterian Church of Wilkes-Barre (Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania), Greenstone United Methodist Church (Chicago), Immanuel Presbyterian Church (Albuquerque, New Mexico), Saint Mark’s Church (Philadelphia), St. Rita Catholic Church (Indianapolis), Union United Methodist Church (Boston), and Wicker Park Lutheran Church (Chicago).

“The 16 sacred places selected to join our fund this year are, yes, beautiful and historic buildings,” said Partners for Sacred Places president Bob Jaeger, “but they are also irreplaceable assets that support the life and work of congregations and provide invaluable resources to their communities.”
