D.C.-based Omidyar Network has announced that MICHELE LAWRENCE JAWANDO, formerly head of U.S. Strategic Engagement and Public Policy Partnerships at Google, is joining the organization as senior yice president of programs. In that role, Jawando, a veteran of Silicon Valley will oversee ON's Responsible Technology, Reimagining Capitalism, and Pluralism teams. 

The John Templeton Foundation in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, has announced the appointments of AAMIR ALI as an officer in its Mathematics and Physical Sciences program and ALEXANDRA WAS as an officer in its Character Virtue Development program. An experimental cosmologist by training, Ali joins the foundation after having completed a Simons Observatory postdoctoral scholarship at the University of California, Berkeley. Was comes to the foundation from the world of academic editing, where she worked with students at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels to strengthen their writing. Prior to that, she was a postdoctoral scholar at Villanova University an obtained PhD and MA degrees in psychology from Harvard University and a BA in psychology from Boston University.

The Indianapolis-based Lumina Foundation has announced the appointment of El Paso Community College president WILLIAM SERRATA to its board of directors of directors. Since joining the community college district as president in 2012, Serrata has overseen an increase student success and student retention and boosted dual-credit enrollment and graduation rates. Under his leadership, the school was among ten finalists for the 2015 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, which is awarded every two years by the Aspen Institute in recognition of outstanding outcomes among more than eleven hundred community colleges nationally. He also serves on the advisory board of the Higher Education Research and Development Institute and previously served on the National Student Clearinghouse Advisory Council.

The Public Art Fund in New York City has announced the addition of six new directors to its board, including artist FARAH AL QASIMI, whose practice embraces video, photography, and performance, and media artist RAFAEL LOZANO-HEMMER, whose work melds architecture and performance art. Also named to the board were WILLIAM FLOYD, director of government affairs and public policy at Google; philanthropist ALLISON RUSSO; KAREN SEYMOUR, a partner at law firm Sullivan & Cromwell; and philanthropist MICHAEL STERNBERG, an adviser to alternative asset manager Warana Capital.

The International Center for Journalists in Washington, D.C., has announced the appointment of BRENT JONES and SOPHIE SCHMIDT to its board of directors. Jones is editor of culture, training, and outreach at the Wall Street Journal and previously served as head of standards and ethics for USA Today, a role that expanded to support a hundred-plus local newsrooms across the Gannett system. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland. Schmidt founded Rest of World in 2019 after a decade of living and working in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. She is a graduate of the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Harvard Kennedy School, and Princeton University.

And the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has announced the appointment of JOHANNA CHAO KREILICK as its next president. Kreilick joins the organization from the Open Society Foundations, where she managed the unit responsible for planning, research, and assessment for the foundations’ fifty global programs, national foundations, and advocacy offices. While at OSF, she also founded the $43 million Climate Action Initiative, the U.S. component of which includes support for nonpartisan public mobilization and climate policy advocacy at city, state, regional and federal levels. Prior to joining Open Society in 2013, she created and led a justice and human rights program at the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard University; launched and led an economic justice grantmaking program at the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee;  and organized within the Asian and Pacific Islander immigrant community to advance rights-respecting economic and health policy.
