People in the News (1/09/05): Appointments and Promotions

The Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers in Washington, D.C., has named ELLEN BARCLAY as president. Barclay, previously deputy executive director of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (which administers the Fulbright Scholar program), has also served as executive director for the American String Teachers Association and as director of professional education services for the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. She succeeds Alison Wiley, the forum's founding president.

The Cleveland-based National Board of Grantmakers in Aging has named R. ROBERTSON HILTON to its board. Hilton, president and CEO of the McGregor Group, oversees the grantmaking activities of the McGregor Foundation. Before joining McGregor in 2001, he worked for twenty-seven years in the banking industry.

The Marin Community Foundation has named SARA BARNES as chair of its board and Carlos Porrata as vice chair. Barnes, a professional artist and community volunteer, was previously a professor at the McLaren School of Business at the University of San Francisco and has served on the board of San Francisco's Architectural Heritage. She joined the foundation's board in 2002. Porrata, who has served on MCF's board since 1999, recently retired as a ranger in the California State Parks System, where he worked for over twenty-nine years. He also served as a trustee of the Shoreline Unified School District and is vice chair of the Tomales Bay Watershed Council.

The Center for Public Integrity in Washington, D.C., has named ROBERTA BASKIN as executive director. Baskin, an award-winning investigative journalist, was previously a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, a senior Washington correspondent for PBS's NOW with Bill Moyers, a senior producer for ABC News' 20/20, and a chief investigative correspondent for CBS's 48 Hours.

In related news, the Center for Effective Philanthropy in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has named PHIL GIUDICE as board chair. Giudice, managing director of energy company EnerNOC, was previously vice president of Mercer Management Consulting and an exploration geologist for Chevron and Freeport-McMoRan. A longtime board member and advisor to the center, where he has served as vice chair since 2002, Giudice also serves on the boards of City Year Boston and the Haitian Health Foundation, and was founding board chair for Boston Cares.
