The Los Angeles-based California Community Foundation has named DOROTHY AVILA COURTNEY as board chair and DENNIS GERTMENIAN, CAROLINA REYES, THOMAS SCHUMACHER, and WILLIAM E.B. SIART as board members. Courtney, recently retired, was executive director of the Richstone Family Center for twenty-four years. Gertmenian is founder of Ready Pac Produce. Reyes, a perinatologist, is executive director of the Los Angeles Best Babies Collaborative and assistant professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Schumacher is president of the Buena Vista Theatrical Group. Siart, formerly chair and CEO of First Interstate Bancorp, serves as board chair of Excellent Education Development, a charter school development nonprofit. The foundation also announced the one-year appointment of ALVERTHA PENNY to direct its program department.

The Atlanta-based Southeastern Council of Foundations has elected EUGENE W. COCHRANE, JR., DOYCE H. DEAS, DEBRA M. JACOBS, THOMAS C. KEITH, THOMAS W. ROSS, ALLYSON ROTHROCK, and DAVID D. WEITNAUER to its board. Cochrane, president of the Duke Endowment, was a hospital administrator for eight years. Deas, a trustee of the L. D. Hancock Foundation, chairs the Doyce H. Deas Foundation in Tupelo, Mississippi. Jacobs is president of the William G. Selby and Marie Selby Foundation in Sarasota, Florida, and administers eight other foundations. Keith, executive director of the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina in Columbia, was previously CEO of the Providence Hospital Foundation. Ross, executive director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, was previously director of the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts. Rothrock, assistant executive director of the Harvest Foundation of the Piedmont in Martinsville, Virginia, is the founder of Best Travel. And Weitnauer, executive director of the Rockdale Foundation in Atlanta, was previously associate pastor of South Highland Presbyterian Church in Birmingham.

The National Center for Family Philanthropy in Washington, D.C., has named SALLY BOWLES, MARY MOUNTCASTLE, and ALICIA ANNE PHILIPP to its board. Bowles, director of the Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation, formerly headed the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation and was executive director of the Rockefeller Foundation-funded Committee for South African Development. Mountcastle is president of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, serves on the board of the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation, and is a former board chair of the Council on Foundations. Philipp, president of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta for twenty-six years, is a member of the advisory committee of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University and serves on the board of Central Atlanta Progress.

The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation in Springfield, New Jersey, has elected ARNOLD H. SNIDER to its board. Snider, general partner of Deerfield Management, a hedge fund that specializes in health care, previously worked as a pharmaceutical analyst at Kidder, Peabody & Co. Together with his wife, Kit, he started Rheuminations, Inc. and the Lupus Clinical Trials Consortium, which benefit lupus research.

BRUCE CRAWFORD, chairman of New York City's Lincoln Center, will step down in June, having served for three years. Crawford, chairman of Omnicom Group, is a former president and general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, of which he plans to remain a trustee.

The New York City-based Population Council has named PETER J. DONALDSON as president. Donaldson, formerly head of the Population Reference Bureau and the Committee on Population of the National Research Council, has worked for the Population Council as vice president of international programs and, based in Thailand, as regional director for South and East Asia.

In related news, Catholic Charities USA in Alexandria, Virginia, has elected MARCOS HERRERA to its board. Herrera, an engineering consultant with Structural Integrity Associates in San Jose, California, is currently president of the board of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County and of the Mabel B. Wright Education Fund.
