People in the News (10/23/11): Appointments and Promotions
The Miami-based John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has announced the appointment of ANNA SPANGLER NELSON, FRANCISCO L. BORGES, SUSAN D. KRONICK, and STEPHANIE BELL-ROSE to its board. Nelson is chair of private investment firm Spangler Companies, Inc. Borges is chair and managing partner at Landmark Partners and former treasurer of the NAACP. Kronick is retired vice chair of Macy's, Inc. Bell-Rose is a managing director of TIAA-CREF and head of the TIAA-CREF Institute, and earlier served as president of the Goldman Sachs Foundation and also as counsel and public affairs program officer at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
The Phoenix-based Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust has announced the appointment of KAREN LELAND as director of communications and external relations. Leland, currently director of communications, marketing, and media relations for the Global Institute of Sustainability and its School of Sustainability at Arizona State University, served earlier as director of communications at ASU's office of economic affairs and as public affairs/communications manager at the university's Morrison Institute for Public Policy.
The Los Angeles-based Conrad N. Hilton Fund for Sisters has announced the appointment of MARCIA SICHOL as executive director. Sichol, a Catholic nun, served as executive director of the fund from 1995 to 1999, when she returned to her religious congregation, the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, to lead its American province. In the interim, she held a number of leadership positions in the society and helped develop the African Sisters Education Collaborative.
The Helen Bader Foundation has announced the appointment of JERRY ROBERTS as Milwaukee program officer. Roberts previously served as business division team leader at Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment and was a vice president at Wells Fargo in Milwaukee. He is an adjunct professor at Concordia University Wisconsin's School of Business and Legal Studies.
The D.C.-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace has announced the appointment of CHARLES F. GAUVIN as chief development officer. Gauvin, most recently CEO of Trout Unlimited, a conservation organization, worked previously as an attorney at Beveridge & Diamond, P.C.
In other news, the Center for Effective Philanthropy in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has announced the election of CHRISTY PICHEL to its board. Pichel, president of the San Francisoc-based Stuart Foundation, formerly served in philanthropic management positions at the James Irvine Foundation, the Public Policy Institute of California, and the CS Fund. She currently serves on the board of Northern California Grantmakers and is a member of the President's Roundtable of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
