"While Pam will step down at the end of this year, we know she will continue to offer her leadership and experience to benefit the social good. We applaud and honor all she has achieved as she approaches this next phase of her career."

In other news, PND and members of the Foundation Center community were deeply saddened to learn that SARA L. ENGELHARDT, our former colleague and longtime president of the center, passed away on March 25 at the age of 73 after a long struggle with Lewy Body Dementia. A graduate of Wellesley College and Columbia Teacher's College, Sara worked for the Carnegie Corporation of New York, where she rose to the position of corporate secretary, before joining the Foundation Center as executive vice president in 1987. In 1991, she succeeded THOMAS BUCKMAN (1970-1990) as president and served in that position until her retirement in 2008. Her leadership of the center during those years of sweeping economic and technological change was transformational. "Legacy organizations are not start-ups and Sara knew exactly what do to do in her term as president of Foundation Center,” Brad Smith, the center’s current president, told The Nonprofit Times. “She guided a venerable publisher of foundation directories into the digital age, recruited a talented team, and created a sound financial base for the future before passing the baton to me. She taught me that the job of those fortunate to lead Foundation Center is to build on the past while creating for the future.” Admired and respected by her colleagues in the field, she was named to NPT ’s Power & Influence Top 50 list for ten consecutive years, from 1998 through 2007, and was cherished by her staff and the many people she mentored over the years. Sara, who lost her husband of thirty-eight years, Dean Engelhardt, in 2008 after a too-short battle with pancreatic cancer, is survived by her daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Long  and Barbara Martin, eight grandchildren, and a large and loving extended family. Those of us who had the privilege of working for and with Sara will miss her keen intelligence, her abiding love for the center and its work, and her infectious enthusiasm for life.
