People in the News (6/27/10): Appointments and Promotions

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation has announced the appointment of ELLEN M. GILLIGAN as president. Gilligan, currently vice president for community investment at the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, earlier worked for the United Way of Greater Cincinnati, the United Way of America, the Eisenhower Foundation, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, and the U.S. Small Business Administration. She succeeds Douglas M. Jansson, who is retiring after seventeen years at the foundation.

The Miami-based John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has announced the appointment of DONNA FRISBY-GREENWOOD as program director for Philadelphia and BENOIT WIRZ as director of business consulting, a new position. Frisby-Greenwood earlier launched and led the Philadelphia school district's Office of College and Career Awareness and was executive director of Rock the Vote, Los Angeles; Inner-City Games Philadelphia; and Children First. Wirz, a founder of U.S. Global, earlier was vice president for strategic planning at U.S. Global Glass and vice president of business development for U.S. Global Synfuel.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Chevy Chase, Maryland, has announced the appointment of CHERYL MOORE as its first chief operating officer. Moore, COO for HHMI's Janelia Farm research campus, previously served as senior vice president and chief operating officer of what is now known as the Sanford-Burnham Institute for Medical Research in La Jolla, California. Earlier, she held top management positions at an international financial services firm and at both start-up and public healthcare companies.

The New York City-based Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has announced the appointment of LEISLE LIN as vice president of finance and as board secretary. Lin, currently executive vice president at the Nathan Cummings Foundation, earlier was Mid-Atlantic regional director of operations at the Trust for Public Land and comptroller at the Open Space Institute. She is currently a board member, treasurer, and finance committee chair at Philanthropy New York.

The Indianapolis-based Lumina Foundation has announced the appointments of ELIZABETH GUTIERREZ as director of state policy and HALEY GLOVER as director of convening strategy. Gutierrez, most recently education program director at the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund, earlier served in senior education policy roles for the state of New Mexico and in higher education posts at Santa Fe Community College and the University of California, Riverside. Most recently associate commissioner for policy and planning studies at the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, Glover previously served in fiscal policy positions in Massachusetts state government.

The New York City-based Peter G. Peterson Foundation has announced the appointment of PAULA VAN NESS as chief operating officer. Van Ness, most recently president and CEO of the Starlight Children's Foundation, earlier served as president and CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, the National Alliance to End Homelessness, and the National AIDS Fund.

The Toronto-based MasterCard Foundation has announced the appointment of HUTHAM S. OLAYAN as a board member. Olayan, a principal at international investing firm Olayan Group, is also a director of Morgan Stanley and Equity International and a member of the international advisory board of the Blackstone Group.

Enterprise Community Partners in Columbia, Maryland, has announced the election of J. RONALD TERWILLIGER as board chair. Terwilliger, an Enterprise board member since 2007, currently serves as co-chair of the Enterprise Real Estate Leadership Council and also is chairman emeritus of Trammell Crow Residential, a national residential real estate company. Earlier, he served as chair of the Urban Land Institute, where he continues to serve on the governance committee. He is also former chair of the international board of directors of Habitat for Humanity and currently chairs Habitat's $4 billion global capital campaign.

In other news, the New York Community Trust has announced that its president, LORIE SLUTSKY, was named to a New York State Court task force charged with getting adequate state funding for the representation of low-income New Yorkers in civil cases. Slutsky, president of the trust since 1990, began her career there as a program officer with responsibility for education, housing, government and urban affairs, and neighborhood revitalization.
