People in the News, 9/29/13: Appointments and Promotions
The John Templeton Foundation has announced the appointment of JIM PITOFSKY as managing director of strategic alliances. Pitofsky, formerly chief strategy officer at the Arizona Community Foundation, earlier served as vice president and acting president of the Echoing Green Foundation, deputy director of the National Youth Leadership Council, and executive director for Hands on Bay Area. He also founded and directed a service-learning organization that was adopted by the National Association of Partners in Education, founded and served as the CEO of SeaChange until it merged in 2003 with the National Gathering for Social Entrepreneurs to form the Social Enterprise Alliance, and served as president of the National and Community Service Coalition.
World Hope International has announced the appointment of JOHN LYON as president and chief executive officer. Lyon, currently the organization's vice president of programs, previously served the organization as a board member for four years and as a volunteer for over thirteen years. Earlier, Lyon practiced law with WilmerHale, during which time he helped WHI develop its microfinance program, and also worked with Houghton College and two institutions in Sierra Leone to develop WHI's Outgrowers project. Lyon succeeds TOM E. ARMIGER, who has accepted a position as lead pastor of a church in Fort Myers, Florida.
The International Women's Media Foundation has announced the appointments of BRYAN MONROE and GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS to its board. Monroe is an award-winning journalist and the editor of CNNPolitics.com. Stephanopoulos is ABC News' chief political correspondent and serves as anchor of ABC's Good Morning America and This Week with George Stephanopoulos.
The Public Welfare Foundation has announced that MYRTIS H. POWELL and JULIET V. GARCIA will step off its board on October 1, when their terms expire. Powell, who joined the foundation's board in 1988, earlier served as president and CEO of the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative and as a program officer at the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation. Garcia, who joined the foundation's board in 1996, is former president of the University of Texas at Brownsville and served on the boards of the American Council on Education, the Ford Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the National Academies Policy and Global Sciences division.
The National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy has announced the appointments of SHERECE WEST-SCANTLEBURY, TAJ JAMES, PRAMILA JAYAPAL, DANIEL J. LEE, MARY LASSEN, and RUTH MESSINGER to its board. West-Scantlebury, president and CEO of the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, was elected unanimously as board chair, succeeding DIANE FEENEY. James is founder and executive director of the Movement Strategy Center, Jayapal serves as Distinguished Taconic Fellow at the Center for Community Change, Lee is executive director of the Levi Strauss Foundation, Lassen is managing director of the Center for Community Change, and Messinger is president of American Jewish World Service.
In other news, the Kansas Arts Foundation has announced the appointment of KAREN LANE CHRISTILLES as its first executive director. Christilles, most recently associate director of the Lied Center of Kansas, brings over two decades of experience in arts administration and funding to the position. "The foundation has been steadily growing since its founding in 2011 and now [requires] a new approach to meeting organizational, membership, and stakeholder needs," said board president Linda Weis. "I know Karen will be a tremendous executive director to help...fulfill [our] potential going forward in securing the future for Kansas arts."
