Pew Center for Arts & Heritage Awards $1.1 Million to Philadelphia Arts Groups
The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage has announced grants totaling more than $1.1 million through the Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative to seven local visual arts and cultural organizations.
Exhibition grants awarded by the center include $250,000 each to the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania and the James A. Michener Art Museum for surveys of the works of Jason Rhoades and Paul Evans; $250,000 to the Philadelphia Museum of Art for a multidisciplinary exhibition on Marcel Duchamp's influence on John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Jasper Johns, and Robert Rauschenberg; $200,000 to the Philadelphia Art Alliance for an installation of sculptures by Song Dong and Yin Xiuzhen; and $118,700 to the Print Center for an exhibition and two-part publication by artist Demetrius Oliver.
In addition, planning grants of $25,000 and $15,000 were awarded to the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education to incorporate hybrid "ecovention" strategies into its exhibition model and the Ars Nova Workshop to prepare an exhibition that explores the link between the aural and visual work of two European jazz musicians.
Established in 2005, the center houses seven funding initiatives of the Pew Charitable Trusts dedicated to supporting artists and arts and heritage organizations in the Philadelphia area.
"We are pleased to support such a wide array of exhibitions," said Greg Rowe, director of culture initiatives at the Pew Charitable Trusts. "Audiences throughout our region will have rare opportunities over the next two years to see the work of highly respected and influential artists in their fields, across generations and media. It is further proof of the vitality of our region's visual arts scene."
