The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage has announced fellowships and grants totaling more than $9.3 million in support of forty-nine artists and arts groups in the greater Philadelphia area.

Grants were awarded to thirty-seven local arts and cultural organizations, including Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture, which will receive $240,000 to explore the relationship between Arabic and European music; the Crossing, which was awarded $240,000 to commission seven prominent composers to create responses to a sacred musical work from the seventeenth century; the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation, which will receive $360,000 to support a major exhibition of Pennsylvania German folk art; and the Galleries at Moore College of Art & Design, which was awarded $240,000 for an exhibition that will examine the history of the unorthodox artist-run spaces that emerged in Mexico City in the 1990.

The center also awarded Pew Fellowships of $60,000 each to twelve individual artists. Awardees include Susan Rethorst, an award-winning internationally recognized choreographer currently in her fifth decade of making dances; Leroy Johnson, a mixed-media artist active in Philadelphia's Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and '70s who is still creating vital work; and Matt Saunders, an emerging experimental performance artist who develops inventive, critically acclaimed set designs for major venues in the United States.

"Our 2014 grantees attest to the dynamism and variety of Philadelphia's cultural scene and carry the promise of exciting and rewarding experiences for audiences across the region," said PCAH executive director Paula Marincola. "We are gratified to support such a vibrant and ambitious group of artists and projects."
