Awarded through the foundation’s Healing Through the Arts and Nature initiative, the grants will support 59 nonprofits across San Diego for programs serving youth, veterans, justice-impacted individuals, and historically underserved communities through efforts such as playwriting and horse therapy to hiking, farming, dancing, painting, and surfing. Healing Through the Arts recipients include A Step Beyond ($100,000), Fern Street Community Arts ($150,000), Project PAINT: The Prison Arts Initiative ($58,000), San Diego Urban Warriors ($100,000), Synergy Arts Foundation ($31,000), and Viet Voices ($126,000). Healing Through Nature recipients include Botanical Community Development Initiatives ($150,000), Coastal Roots Farm ($100,000), Kumeyaay Community College ($150,000), Paddle for Peace ($75,000), and the San Diego Natural History Museum ($150,000).

“This grant has been so important,” said Synergy Arts Foundation executive director Naomi Nussbaum, who hopes to use the funding to attract matching funds elsewhere. “We’re a tiny all-volunteer nonprofit, and the work never stops, but it’s incredibly rewarding.”
