Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Receives $20 Million
Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance in California has received a $20 million gift from Priscilla Hunt and her late husband, Donald G. Hunt.
The largest gift in the history of the hospital will support a $35 million capital campaign for a Cardiovascular Center of Excellence that includes new facilities and technology. In recognition of the gift, the hospital’s Heritage Tower will be renamed the Donald & Priscilla Hunt Tower. Prior to making the gift, the Hunts found inspiration in Sister Terrence Landini and Providence’s promise to each patient to "know me, care for me, ease my way."
"[Little Company of Mary’s] core values of respect, compassion, justice, excellence, and stewardship are also our core values," said Priscilla Hunt in a statement. The couple previously established an endowment in support of palliative care and community health programs at the hospital, including Partners for Healthy Kids and the Mobile Pediatric Van, the Daily Breeze reports.
A real estate developer, Donald G. Hunt died in February 2016 at the age of 96. A substituted judgment petition to amend his existing trust — which provided that upon his death his wife would receive income distributions, and that upon her death the remainder would pass to a charitable trust — was granted in January.
"This extraordinary gift to Providence Little Company of Mary is an inspiring demonstration of how donors throughout the years have transformed this hospital through their generosity," said Sean Armstrong, board chair of the Providence Little Company of Mary Foundation. "The Hunts believe that everyone in our community deserves access to the highest quality health care, and this generous gift ensures that South Bay residents will continue to receive world-class cardiovascular care right here in their community."
